Shooting at the Press Gala in Washington: Attacker Targeted Government Officials, According to the Attorney General

Title: Suspect in Shooting During Gala Dinner at Washington Hilton Targeted High-Level Officials, Says Acting Attorney General
The suspect in the shooting incident that occurred during the press gala dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel on Saturday night, attended by President Donald Trump, appeared to be targeting high-ranking officials in the U.S. administration, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated on Sunday.
Preliminary evidence suggests that the man "was aiming at members of the administration," Blanche told CBS News.
The suspect, identified by authorities as 31-year-old Cole Allen, is reportedly "not actively cooperating" with investigators, the official noted. Initial investigations indicate that he traveled to Washington by train from Los Angeles, with a stop in Chicago.
Allen had checked in as a guest at the Washington Hilton on Friday, as CNN reported. Blanche emphasized that, so far, there is no indication that the suspect was known to security services prior to the incident.
According to authorities, the man was found in possession of a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. The two firearms were reportedly acquired legally over the past two years. However, the exact motives for the attack and the specific targets remain unclear.
The incident took place about five minutes before the program for the dinner was set to begin, following gunfire heard outside the ballroom. This prompted security teams to react swiftly and evacuate President Trump and his entourage urgently.
The President announced on Saturday night that a Secret Service agent assigned to his protection was shot during the incident but survived due to his bulletproof vest.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is an annual gala held at the Washington Hilton by the White House Correspondents’ Association. It brings together journalists, political leaders, celebrities, and public figures.
Proceeds from this event go towards funding journalism scholarships and programs supporting press freedom.
This marks the first time President Trump has attended this dinner as President. Following the cancellation of the event due to the incident, he promised to reschedule it with the organizers within the next 30 days.
