As part of the ongoing oversight of key health sector projects and the reinforcement of community-based policies, Minister of Health and Social Protection, Mr. Amine Tehraoui, conducted field visits on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, to the construction sites of the Laâyoune University Hospital Center and the Guelmim University Hospital Center. Accompanying him were the Secretary General of the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra regional Wilaya and the Wali of the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, along with regional officials, technical teams, and stakeholders supervising these projects.
These visits are part of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection’s regular program aimed at closely monitoring the progress of construction work, ensuring adherence to technical and medical standards, and evaluating compliance with set deadlines, all to facilitate the timely operational readiness of these facilities.
During his visit to the Laâyoune University Hospital Center, the Minister reviewed the final phases of construction. This facility is set to become the first university hospital in the southern provinces.
The hospital spans an area of over 180,000 square meters, of which 95,000 square meters are built-up, and it will accommodate 500 beds to serve a population of over 451,028 inhabitants from Laâyoune and surrounding areas.
The Laâyoune University Hospital Center features integrated medical and surgical units, including a medico-surgical center for critical care, an emergency department, medical imaging services, a cardiology and vascular center, as well as shared services for ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology. It will also have nephrology services, day hospitals for surgery and pediatrics, maternal and child health units, mental health services, as well as functional consultation services and administrative support structures.
During this visit, the Minister chaired a technical meeting with all stakeholders to discuss the final touches and program steps leading up to the planned opening of the center, emphasizing the need for close coordination among all parties to ensure the hospital’s operational readiness as swiftly as possible.
Regarding the Guelmim University Hospital Center, the field visit provided an opportunity to assess the progress of construction and the technical and organizational challenges faced on site.
This project is being developed over an area of approximately 14 hectares, with a total built surface of nearly 44,000 square meters, plus an additional 26,500 square meters earmarked for future expansion. It will feature a capacity of 376 beds and will be equipped with modern medical equipment meeting international standards.
The Guelmim University Hospital Center will include various integrated units and services, such as a surgical unit and a mother-child unit, as well as an advanced medical-technical platform that combines emergency services, intensive care, medical imaging, and laboratories. It will also house hospitalization and day medicine services, medical-technical and logistical support facilities, along with administrative and training structures.
Following this visit, a technical meeting was held with contractors and project teams to evaluate construction progress and establish necessary measures to accelerate the pace of work and address challenges encountered on site, as part of ongoing coordination among all parties involved.
These visits demonstrate the Ministry of Health and Social Protection’s unwavering commitment to enhancing regional healthcare services, bringing specialized hospital services closer to citizens, improving the quality of healthcare provision, and addressing territorial disparities in access to care.
It is noteworthy that these hospital projects are part of the New Development Model for the Southern Provinces of the Kingdom.
