Tfer Dam in Larache Province: A 1.14 billion dirham project to strengthen water security

The Loukkos Basin Prepares for the Tfer Dam Project
The Loukkos basin, located in the Larache province, is set to welcome the Tfer Dam, a hydraulic project aimed at strengthening Morocco’s water storage capabilities. This initiative comes in response to the increasing pressure on water resources and the effects of climate change.
The future dam is expected to have a storage capacity of approximately 400 million cubic meters, with its height reaching about 61 meters above the foundation. The project is designed to enhance the mobilization and storage system of water in the Loukkos basin.
The total estimated cost for the construction of the Tfer Dam is 1.14 billion dirhams, with a projected construction duration of around 54 months. The project will include several necessary structures and equipment to ensure the infrastructure is operational under optimal conditions.
This initiative occurs as Morocco’s water policy emphasizes the enhancement of storage capacities, particularly in light of irregular precipitation patterns and the increased pressure on water resources.
Once operational, the Tfer Dam is expected to mobilize and store significant quantities of water for use during periods of heightened demand or reduced water availability.
Additionally, the infrastructure will help secure the region’s water supply, particularly as agricultural, urban, and economic activities are evolving, leading to increased water needs.
The Tfer Dam aligns with a broader strategy to develop the Kingdom’s hydraulic infrastructure, enhance storage capacities, and diversify water supply sources to better cope with drought periods and climate changes.
However, the project’s success will depend on adherence to construction deadlines, the quality of the works and equipment, and the effective management of the stored resources after the dam becomes operational. The goal will be to ensure optimal use of this investment and to sustainably enhance water security in the Loukkos basin.
