Severe Winter Storm Blasts Multiple U.S. States, Claiming Lives and Disrupting Services

A powerful winter storm sweeping across several American states has resulted in at least ten fatalities, left over a million households without electricity, and caused the cancellation of thousands of flights, marking one of the most severe weather incidents the country has experienced in recent years.

State of Emergency Declared Amid Worsening Conditions

The National Weather Service forecasts continued snowfall on Monday, as around twenty states, including the federal capital of Washington, have declared a state of emergency. Some experts are considering this storm as one of the worst in decades, given the rapid plummet in temperatures, heavy snowfall, and ice accumulation posing serious risks.

Authorities have warned residents about the ongoing snowfall, freezing rain, and ice storms expected to last until Monday morning.

Victims Reported in New York, Texas, and Louisiana

In New York, Mayor Zahra(n) Mamdani announced over the weekend the discovery of five bodies outside in the extreme cold, highlighting how this storm underscores the dangers of severe cold and the vulnerability of at-risk populations, particularly the homeless.

In Texas, officials confirmed the deaths of three individuals, including a 16-year-old girl who died in an accident caused by icy conditions. In Louisiana, the health department reported two fatalities due to hypothermia.

Widespread Power Outages and Air Travel Disruptions

According to PowerOutage.com, more than a million households lost electricity, with about 840,000 customers still in the dark by Sunday night, primarily in the southern states. Tennessee alone experienced over 300,000 power outages affecting homes and businesses, while Louisiana, Mississippi, and Georgia each reported more than 100,000 service interruptions.

Meanwhile, major airports in Washington, Philadelphia, and New York faced near paralysis, with over 19,000 flights canceled since Saturday and thousands more delayed, as per FlightAware.

Authorities Urge Residents to Stay Indoors

Authorities from Texas to North Carolina, including New York, have urged residents to remain indoors due to hazardous conditions. Texas emergency services stressed the need to avoid non-essential travel.

The storm continued to move northeast, causing significant snowfall in densely populated cities, including Philadelphia, New York, and Boston, while streets and sidewalks in Washington were blanketed in snow.

On his platform Truth Social, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that authorities were continuing to monitor the situation and coordinate their efforts with the affected states, urging citizens to exercise caution and stay warm.

Intense Cold Wave Expected After the Storm

Meteorologists link this weather event to a disturbance of the polar vortex, a mass of cold air typically contained over the Arctic that has shifted southward. An intense cold wave is expected to persist for at least a week following the storm’s passage, particularly in the Northern Great Plains and the central U.S., where wind chill could drive temperatures down to –45 °C.

Authorities are warning that such extreme conditions can lead to frostbite in mere minutes, urging the public to remain vigilant.
