Olympic Safi and Wydad Casablanca Draw 1-1 in CAF Confederation Cup Quarterfinal
In a thrilling encounter at the Al Massira Stadium in Safi, Olympic Safi and Wydad Casablanca battled to a 1-1 draw on Sunday in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinals.
Wydad took the lead in the 67th minute, courtesy of Ramiro Vaca, putting the visitors ahead in a match characterized by high intensity between the two Moroccan teams.
However, Olympic Safi managed to equalize late in the match, benefiting from an unfortunate own goal by goalkeeper Mehdi Benabid in the 86th minute, which allowed the home side to claim a hard-fought draw.
The qualification for the semifinals will be decided in the return leg, scheduled for next Sunday at the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca.
In other quarterfinal matches, the Congolese club Otoho also settled for a draw against Egypt’s Zamalek (1-1). The clash between Egypt’s Al Masry and Algeria’s CR Belouizdad ended similarly at 1-1. Meanwhile, Maniema Union from the Democratic Republic of Congo cemented their position for qualification with a home victory over USM Alger, winning 2-1.
