Legislative Elections 2026: Government Strengthens Public Funding and Representation for Youth and Women
Reform of Electoral Campaign Financing
As the legislative elections set for September 23, 2026 approach, the Moroccan government has initiated a review of campaign financing rules and the mechanisms for political representation. Two decrees adopted by the Council aim to regulate public aid to political parties, while introducing measures that promote youth, women, and Moroccans residing abroad (MRE).
Transparency and Securing Financial Flows
These texts define the procedures for the disbursement and allocation of public aid, as well as the conditions under which financial advances granted to parties will be provided. According to Mustapha Baïtas, government spokesperson, the first decree aligns with the application of legal provisions governing the election of members of the Chamber of Representatives. The goal is to secure campaign financing and ensure transparent management of public resources.
Enhanced Support for Youth, Women, and MRE
The framework anticipates a significant increase in public funding for specific candidate categories. Funding will be multiplied sixfold for each seat won by a woman, a candidate under 35 years old, or a Moroccan residing abroad. Additionally, the reimbursement rate for campaign expenditures can reach up to 75% for young candidates, showcasing the government’s commitment to promoting political inclusion and renewing the political elite.
Towards a New Generation of Political Leaders
These reforms are part of a broader strategy for the modernization of the Moroccan political landscape, aiming to encourage the participation of younger generations, women, and the diaspora, while enhancing transparency and accountability in electoral campaign financing.
