SRM Drâa-Tafilalet: A Day of Water Awareness

Awareness Day for Water Conservation Initiated by Drâa-Tafilalet Multi-Service Regional Company

On the occasion of World Water Day, the Drâa-Tafilalet Multi-Service Regional Company organized an awareness day on April 1, 2026. This event aimed to educate students and the general public about best practices for water use and to enhance the culture of preserving this essential resource.

During the event, participants received practical advice and insights into the rational use of water. They also had the opportunity to learn about professions related to the distribution of drinking water and the management of liquid sanitation, including the technical equipment used in operating the networks.

In addition, the company showcased its major programs and projects aimed at securing drinking water supply in the region. This includes the construction of eight water reservoirs in the provinces of Ouarzazate, Zagora, and Tinghir, with an investment of approximately 70 million dirhams planned for the period 2026-2027. These infrastructures are expected to increase the storage capacity by over 13%, reaching more than 58,000 cubic meters.

Responding to the challenges of water stress, which have been exacerbated by climate change and population pressure, the company is also participating in an emergency program launched by the state. This plan includes the construction of 33 desalination plants for brackish water, with a total capacity of 164 liters per second, equating to nearly 5 million cubic meters annually. So far, 22 stations have already been activated across the region.

Moreover, the company continues to focus on enhancing alternative resource utilization, particularly through the reuse of treated wastewater. This technology is already operational in Zagora, while additional structural projects totaling over 46 million dirhams are planned for 2026 in the provinces of Midelt and Ouarzazate to facilitate gradual implementation.

Finally, as part of improving distribution network efficiency, a budget of 14.5 million dirhams will be allocated in 2026 for maintenance and leak detection. Alongside this, a total investment of 384 million dirhams is projected for the rehabilitation and expansion of networks, as well as bolstering storage capacities to ensure sustainable and quality public service for citizens.
