Akhannouch Chairs Meeting Focused on the Reconstruction of Areas Affected by the Al Haouz Earthquake

Government Meeting on Reconstruction in Al Haouz

The Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, presided over a meeting on Tuesday in Rabat with the inter-ministerial commission responsible for the reconstruction and upgrading program for the areas affected by the Al Haouz earthquake. He also led the third meeting of the Strategic Orientation Council of the High Atlas Development Agency, which was established to monitor the implementation of this program, in accordance with the Royal High Instructions.

At the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Akhannouch praised the progress made in deploying this initiative, urging all stakeholders to accelerate the pace of execution and enhance efficiency to complete ongoing projects and provide tangible solutions for the affected populations.

During this gathering, the General Director of the High Atlas Development Agency presented a detailed report on the status of the program. It was noted that reconstruction and rehabilitation work has been completed for 54,425 homes, while over 3,000 units are still under construction.

The total amount of financial assistance granted to affected households has exceeded 7.2 billion dirhams, of which 4.7 billion dirhams are earmarked for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of homes, alongside more than 2.5 billion dirhams in monthly emergency aid benefiting over 63,000 families.

Regarding infrastructure, more than 2.5 billion dirhams have been mobilized, particularly for debris clearance and reopening roads. Current projects include the rehabilitation of 288 kilometers of roads, 49 engineering structures, and 8 kilometers of signage, with varying progress rates depending on the project.

In the education sector, the program aims to rehabilitate and reconstruct 1,718 schools, with a total budget exceeding 3.5 billion dirhams. To date, 372 institutions have been completed and projects for an additional 1,090 schools have been launched across several provinces.

In health, 110 health centers have been rehabilitated and reconstructed, while work has started in 37 additional centers, with a total estimated cost of 562 million dirhams.

In agriculture, an action plan has been rolled out, which includes the free distribution of livestock and barley to farmers, as well as the rehabilitation of agricultural and hydraulic infrastructures, with upgrades to 14 drinking water supply systems.

The tourism sector has also made strides, with 235 accommodation facilities having completed their rehabilitation work, representing 98% of the beneficiaries from the support program.

Additionally, 180 cooperatives have benefited from the full range of support measures within the framework of the social and solidarity economy, while the first tranche of funding has been disbursed for 1,101 artisanal workshops.

Finally, 1,239 mosques have been reopened following their rehabilitation, and restoration work on 64 historical sites continues, all aimed at preserving and promoting national heritage.

Simultaneously, the third meeting of the Strategic Orientation Council of the Agency provided an overview of the action program for the year 2025, reviewed and approved the planned projects for 2026, and adopted the budget allocated for their implementation.
