Tourism: The Oriental at the Heart of the ONMT’s New Strategy

Once overshadowed by the larger tourist destinations of the Kingdom, the Oriental region is gradually establishing itself as a new axis for development. The Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT) is ramping up initiatives to highlight the potential of this still underutilized territory.

A Region with Untapped Assets

With its Mediterranean coastline, mountainous hinterland, and rich cultural heritage, the Oriental region boasts a variety of tourist resources. However, this diversity has yet to translate into significant tourist traffic, primarily due to a lack of visibility and connectivity. This is precisely where the ONMT aims to make an impact by repositioning the region within national and international tourism circuits.

Connectivity and Online Promotion in Focus

Improving accessibility is a top priority. The ONMT is focusing on strengthening air links and forming partnerships with transport operators to facilitate access to cities such as Oujda, Nador, and Saïdia. Meanwhile, targeted promotional campaigns are being rolled out to raise awareness about the destination among both foreign tourists and the domestic market.

More Diverse and Sustainable Tourism

Beyond beach tourism, the strategy aims to diversify the tourist offering. There is a strong emphasis on ecotourism, cultural tourism, and local experiences to meet the new demands of travelers seeking authenticity. This approach also aligns with sustainability goals, aimed at valuing local resources while preserving environmental balances.

A Lever for Regional Development

By supporting the tourist growth of the Oriental region, the ONMT is contributing to a broader territorial development dynamic. Tourism is seen as a driver for job creation and economic revitalization in the area. Ultimately, the ambition is clear: to make the Oriental a fully-fledged destination that complements Morocco’s tourist offerings and captures an increasing share of visitor flows.
