Health: Rabat and Laâyoune at the Center of Hospital Modernization with the Commissioning of New Teaching Hospitals

Morocco Advances Health System Modernization
Morocco is continuing to modernize its healthcare system with the gradual introduction of new university hospital centers (CHUs), particularly in Rabat and Laâyoune. This initiative aligns with a national strategy aimed at enhancing specialized care services and ensuring better territorial coverage.
According to reports, these infrastructures are key projects in the sector’s reform, aimed at equipping each region of the Kingdom with a modern and operational CHU.
Laâyoune CHU Set to Open in Coming Weeks
Government Chief Aziz Akhannouch announced that the Laâyoune CHU is expected to commence operations in the coming weeks. This opening marks a significant step toward strengthening hospital services in the Southern provinces.
This project is part of a vision for healthcare regionalization that aims to bring specialized services closer to citizens and reduce the need for travel to major urban centers.
Ibn Sina CHU in Rabat Expected by Summer 2026
Similarly, the new Ibn Sina CHU in Rabat is scheduled to open by the end of summer 2026. This large-scale facility will bolster the university-hospital complex in the capital and enhance patient capacity.
Both projects are part of a broader program for modernizing the national hospital network, which includes several CHUs under construction or nearing completion throughout the Kingdom.
A Strategy for Health Sovereignty and Regional Care
This transformation is built on a strategic vision of regional health sovereignty. The goal is for each region to have its own CHU, thereby ensuring better equity in access to specialized care.
Authorities are also focusing on the development of local medical training hubs to strengthen human resources and meet the growing needs of the healthcare system.
Massive Investments in Hospital Infrastructure
The reform is backed by a comprehensive investment program in health infrastructure. Several CHU projects are currently being developed across the country, complemented by an effort to modernize hospital equipment and services.
This momentum aims to improve the quality of care, reduce pressure on large hospital centers, and support the widespread implementation of social protection.
Towards a More Integrated and Efficient Health System
Beyond infrastructure, the reform also involves establishing new health governance models based on territorial health groupings. These structures aim to better coordinate care offerings at the regional level and optimize the management of public health facilities.
This approach signifies a shift toward a more integrated, effective healthcare system that is better aligned with citizens’ needs.
