Morocco-Japan: OCP Strengthens Strategic Partnership with Tokyo on Food Security

A New Chapter in Morocco-Japan Partnership
The partnership between Morocco and Japan is taking a significant step forward. In Tokyo, Japan’s State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ayano Kunimitsu, met with a delegation from OCP Nutricrops, led by its General Director, Faris Derrj, to explore new avenues for cooperation in the areas of food security and phosphate fertilizers.
This meeting underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthen their economic and agricultural ties amid global challenges related to food supply, climate change, and the resilience of logistics chains.
Phosphate Fertilizers at the Core of the Partnership
During the discussions, Ayano Kunimitsu reminded attendees that the joint statement signed last May by the foreign ministers of Morocco and Japan emphasized enhancing bilateral cooperation in food security.
The Japanese representative also reaffirmed her country’s commitment to ensuring a stable supply of phosphate fertilizers, which are considered essential for supporting global agricultural production.
She emphasized that Japan aims to develop a sustainable strategic partnership with the OCP group, recognized as one of the leading global suppliers of phosphates and plant nutrition solutions.
OCP Reaffirms Its Commitment to Global Food Security
For his part, Faris Derrj reiterated OCP Nutricrops’ desire to intensify cooperation with Japanese partners to contribute to strengthening food security on an international scale.
He highlighted that the challenges posed by population growth, climate change, and securing supply chains necessitate enhanced cooperation among global agricultural and fertilizer actors.
Cooperation Set to Expand
Both sides also acknowledged the long-standing relationships that bind Morocco and Japan across several strategic sectors, including agriculture, sustainable water resource management, and rural development.
On this occasion, Ayano Kunimitsu expressed her hope that this visit would pave the way for a new phase of cooperation between Japan and the OCP group through the launch of joint projects in areas of mutual interest.
This meeting is part of the ongoing rapprochement between Rabat and Tokyo, both of which aim to strengthen their strategic partnership focused on food security, sustainable agriculture, and securing supplies of phosphate fertilizers.
