Morocco and India Expand Their Partnership in Trade, Industry, and Investment
The economic relations between Morocco and India are poised to take a significant leap forward with the official visit of Jitin Prasada, India’s Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, as well as Electronics and Information Technology. This visit, scheduled to last until August 25, aims to enhance trade exchanges and broaden the prospects for industrial cooperation and investment between the two countries.
This visit is part of an ongoing initiative aimed at identifying new partnership opportunities and facilitating access for Moroccan and Indian products to each other’s markets, as well as international markets.
The Indian official will co-chair the proceedings of the seventh session of the Morocco-India Joint Commission alongside Omar Hejira, Secretary of State to the Minister of Industry and Trade responsible for Foreign Trade.
This meeting will evaluate the progress of bilateral economic cooperation and identify sectors likely to attract further investment and partnerships in the coming years.
Strategic Sectors at the Heart of Discussions
The discussions will focus on trade, market access, investment, and industry, as well as fertilizer production and supply, customs issues, agriculture, and food safety.
The agenda will also cover several strategic sectors, including pharmaceuticals, health, energy, mining, and renewable energy. Digital transformation, transportation, logistics, tourism, as well as education and training, are also among the areas of envisaged cooperation.
In the field of food safety, a memorandum of understanding is expected to be signed between Morocco’s National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
This agreement aims to enhance coordination between the two parties regarding the control of exchanged food products, particularly through information sharing and expertise on quality and safety standards.
The cooperation is also expected to cover food analysis laboratories, control of imported products, sampling and testing, as well as packaging, wrapping, and labeling. The goal is to facilitate food product exchanges while ensuring their compliance with the regulations in place in both markets.
A Cultural Aspect to Broaden the Partnership
Morocco-India cooperation is not limited to economic matters. A cultural exchange program covering the period from 2026 to 2030 is also expected to be signed during this visit.
This program will focus on the arts, festivals, exhibitions, and heritage protection, as well as strengthening cooperation between museums, libraries, and archives in both countries.
The inclusion of this cultural aspect reflects the desire of Rabat and New Delhi to expand their bilateral partnership to new areas beyond mere trade exchanges and investments.
Trade Exchanges Approaching $4 Billion
This new dynamic comes at a time when trade exchanges between Morocco and India are experiencing notable growth. The merchandise trade between the two countries reached approximately $4 billion in 2025.
Indian exports to Morocco mainly include refined petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, synthetic textiles, and various food products and spices.
On the other hand, Morocco primarily exports phosphates and fertilizers to India, making this sector one of the main pillars of economic cooperation between the two countries.
This complementarity provides a solid foundation for deepening the bilateral partnership, particularly in a context characterized by the mutual desire of both countries to enhance food security and develop industries related to agriculture, energy, and industrial transformation.
The Indian ministerial visit thus confirms the willingness of Morocco and India to evolve their economic relations from a focus on trade exchanges towards a more diversified partnership based on investment, industrial cooperation, expertise transfer, and strengthening the presence of both countries’ businesses in their respective markets.
