Morocco and Chile Take a Significant Step in Economic Relations with New Free Trade Agreement Negotiations
Morocco and Chile have officially launched negotiations aimed at establishing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), marking a new phase in the development of their economic relations. This initiative is designed to enhance trade exchanges, stimulate investments, and create a more ambitious framework for economic cooperation between the two countries.
The opening of discussions was formalized with the signing of a joint declaration by Omar Hejira, the Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, and Paula Estévez, Chile’s Undersecretary for International Economic Relations. This agreement reflects a shared commitment to establish a modern regulatory framework that promotes the trade of goods and services as well as the diversification of investments.
For Chilean authorities, Morocco stands out as a strategic partner due to the vibrancy of its economy and its growing appeal to international investors. With a population of approximately 40 million and sustained growth prospects, Morocco is a market with immense potential for Chilean companies.
Beyond its economic weight, Morocco is also viewed as a genuine gateway to the African continent. This geographical and strategic position is a significant asset for Chile, which aims to bolster its presence in African markets through new trade partnerships.
Economic exchanges between the two nations have seen remarkable growth over the past two decades. Trade volume surged from $10.4 million in 2003 to over $80 million in 2025. In the past five years, bilateral trade has averaged an annual growth rate of over 31%, underlining the existing cooperative potential.
This initiative also aligns with Chile’s strategy to diversify its export markets. Santiago is keen to strengthen ties with several emerging economies, opening new opportunities for its businesses and enhancing its presence in new international markets.
For Morocco, this proposed Free Trade Agreement fits within a broader policy of economic openness and an increase in trade partnerships with various regions around the world. It could help strengthen investment flows, facilitate access to Latin American markets, and solidify Morocco’s position as an economic platform connecting Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
The commencement of these negotiations thus represents a new chapter in the relationship between Rabat and Santiago, with the ambition to build a sustainable and mutually beneficial economic partnership that can invigorate trade exchanges and encourage investments on both sides.
