Summer 2026: Why Water and Electricity Bills Are Rising, According to the SRM Rabat-Salé-Kénitra

Managing Increased Water and Electricity Consumption During Summer
With the scorching summer heat, the demand for water and electricity in households significantly rises. Air conditioning, fans, more frequent showers, garden watering, and heightened agricultural activities lead to increased consumption, which directly impacts utility bills.
However, the Regional Multi-Service Company of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra (SRM-RSK) clarifies that this increase is not due to higher tariffs. The prices for water and electricity remain fixed according to the tariff structure established by the ministerial decree published in Official Bulletin No. 6275 Bis of 2014, which is still in effect.
A Billing System Based on Consumption Tiers
The SRM-RSK reminds us that billing is based on a tiered system. When a household’s consumption exceeds a certain threshold, the additional volumes are charged according to a higher tariff tier.
Thus, even a relatively moderate increase in consumption can lead to a noticeably higher bill, without any change in the tariffs themselves.
For instance, a water bill that usually hovers around 200 dirhams can spike to 240 to 300 dirhams during the summer season. Similarly, a monthly electricity bill of approximately 350 dirhams can rise to between 450 and 600 dirhams, particularly due to the heavy use of air conditioning and electrical appliances.
Consumption Peaks Observed During Summer
Data from the SRM-RSK network confirms the impact of high temperatures on consumption.
The volumes of water distributed in July and August 2025 were, on average, 25% higher than those recorded in February and March 2026. Meanwhile, electricity demand increased by approximately 39% over the same period, illustrating the heightened needs during the hottest months.
Enhanced Anti-Fraud Campaign
In parallel, the SRM-RSK announces the strengthening of its efforts against fraud in water and electricity networks.
This campaign targets illegal connections, unauthorized water withdrawals, and unapproved electrical hookups, aiming to preserve infrastructure and ensure fair distribution of services.
Recommended Actions to Reduce Bills
To limit energy and water consumption during the summer, the SRM-RSK encourages users to adopt a few simple practices.
It is advisable to turn off lights and unused devices, prioritize energy-efficient equipment, set air conditioning to 26°C, quickly repair water leaks, and report leaks occurring before the meter.
The company also recommends watering gardens early in the morning or in the evening to reduce losses due to evaporation.
Through this awareness campaign, SRM-RSK aims to promote responsible resource usage, manage summer consumption effectively, and preserve the capacities of water and electricity networks during peak demand periods.
