Strengthening Cooperation Between Morocco and the International Civil Aviation Organization

The ways to enhance cooperation between Morocco and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) were the focus of a meeting held on Monday in Marrakech between the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, and ICAO Council President, Salvatore Sciacchitano. This meeting took place on the eve of the 4th edition of the International Forum on Air Safety, Safer Skies, and allowed for discussions surrounding the increasing challenges faced by the global civil aviation sector, as well as exploring opportunities for bilateral cooperation to tackle these issues.

Both officials emphasized the importance of strengthening national capacities in aeronautical safety and security. They highlighted the necessity of continuing efforts in skills training and expertise sharing, which are essential for improving safety within this sector.

They also agreed to collaborate on organizing future meetings and seminars aimed at bolstering air safety in Morocco, affirming the country’s position as a responsible actor and strategic partner within the international civil aviation system.

In a statement to the MAP following the meeting, Mr. Sciacchitano expressed his satisfaction in representing the ICAO at this fourth forum. He noted that the forum addresses crucial issues, particularly regarding flights in conflict zones, and called for enhanced collaboration to meet these challenges.

For his part, Mr. Kayouh clarified that this forum, which includes participants from more than 60 countries, serves as a platform to discuss methods for improving air transportation security and harmonizing conflict zone management approaches with various stakeholders in the sector. He also mentioned that this event presents an opportunity to assess the progress made since the third edition of the forum, with concrete recommendations for a "safer" and better-managed airspace.

The Safer Skies Forum, scheduled to take place in Morocco from April 8 to 10, will gather representatives from the ICAO, risk management experts, and international delegations to discuss ways to protect civil flights operating near or above conflict zones and develop coordinated solutions to the growing challenges related to air safety.
