Moroccan Red Fruit Exports Decline Slightly, but See Significant Growth to Canada and the Netherlands

Moroccan Red Fruit Sector Faces Slight Decline in Exports

The Moroccan red fruit sector recorded a slight dip in its exports during the agricultural campaign for 2025-2026, following several years of continuous growth that had firmly established the Kingdom as a leading supplier to international markets, particularly in Europe.

Recent sector data indicates that Moroccan exports of fresh red fruits reached 162,540 tonnes during the last campaign, down from 168,783 tonnes in the 2024-2025 season, reflecting a decline of around 4%.

This decrease can be attributed to several factors, including climatic variances that impacted certain production areas and the damage caused by flooding to several farms and associated infrastructure.

The sector also faced rising production costs, a reduced availability of labor, and increased competition in European markets—all of which weighed on its performance.

Despite this backdrop, Moroccan red fruits continue to show strong momentum in several international markets. Notably, exports of frozen raspberries to the Netherlands saw significant growth in 2025, reaching nearly 1,000 tonnes with a value exceeding 2 million euros, which marks a 50% increase compared to 2024 and a volume four times greater than that recorded in 2023.

This performance has positioned Morocco among the top five suppliers of frozen raspberries to the Netherlands, capturing a 7.4% market share, compared to 5.5% the previous year.

Meanwhile, Moroccan blueberry exports are diversifying beyond traditional markets. Between July 2024 and June 2025, shipments to Canada reached 1,900 tonnes, valued at over 19 million dollars, nearly doubling the volume exported during the previous campaign.

These results illustrate Morocco’s ongoing strategy to broaden its export markets and reduce dependence on European markets in favor of new destinations, notably in North America and Asia, while also expanding the production of blueberries, raspberries, and frozen red fruits.

However, the sector still faces several challenges, including the effects of climate change, pressure on water resources, rising logistical costs, and the need to maintain product quality throughout the export chain.

Exports of fresh strawberries also recorded a significant decline between October 2025 and April 2026, with around 8,700 tonnes exported—almost half the volume achieved during the same period in the previous campaign.

Despite these challenges, Morocco retains a prominent position in the global red fruit market, thanks to the expertise of its producers, the development of its export infrastructure, and the growing demand for Moroccan products.

The future of the sector will largely depend on enhanced investments in modern irrigation techniques, the expansion of cold chain infrastructure, the adoption of varieties more resilient to climate change, and the continued diversification of export markets.
