Morocco Takes Major Step in Electric Vehicle Battery Production
Morocco is set to advance its automotive industry with the upcoming launch of a significant electric vehicle battery production facility in Kénitra. Backed by the Chinese group Gotion High-Tech through its local subsidiary Gotion Power Morocco, this project represents an investment of approximately 65 billion dirhams.
Highlighted as one of the kingdom’s major industrial initiatives, this facility is expected to enhance Morocco’s position in the global value chain of electric mobility and contribute to the development of an industrial ecosystem focused on electric vehicles and their components.
The factory is slated to begin operations before the end of summer 2026. The project is anticipated to create several thousand direct and indirect jobs, while fostering the rise of an integrated industrial chain around battery production, automotive components, and technologies related to electric mobility.
This investment aligns with Morocco’s strategy to bolster its attractiveness to international manufacturers and solidify its status as a regional automotive hub. The kingdom benefits from developed industrial infrastructure, geographical proximity to European markets, and a network of trade agreements that facilitate access to various international markets.
Gotion High-Tech’s project arrives amid a rapidly transforming global automotive industry, marked by the acceleration of electrification and the pursuit of new battery production capabilities close to major markets.
Through this initiative, Morocco aims to progressively transcend its role as a mere automobile assembly platform and strengthen its foothold in the high-value segments of the electric vehicle production chain.
With this investment, the kingdom reaffirms its ambition to establish itself as an African industrial hub in the fields of electric mobility, battery production, and technologies related to energy transition.
