Toyota announced on Wednesday that former president Hiroshi Okuda has passed away at the age of 93. He is widely credited with transforming Toyota into one of the global giants in the automotive industry and for championing the development of the renowned Prius, a pioneer in hybrid vehicles.
Toyota confirmed the news to AFP, referencing reports from Japanese media but did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Hiroshi Okuda took the helm of the company in 1995, during a challenging period for Toyota. He became the first leader from outside the founding family to head the automaker in several decades.
During his tenure, he supported several innovative projects, including the development of the RAV4, one of the brand’s first SUVs, as well as the Prius, the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle combining an internal combustion engine with an electric motor, at a time when electrified vehicles were still relatively uncommon.
Okuda also oversaw Toyota’s international expansion and the construction of several factories abroad, significantly enhancing the Japanese automaker’s global presence.
After stepping down as president, he continued to serve as chairman of the board until 2006. Under his leadership during a period of international growth, Toyota eventually surpassed American automaker General Motors to become the world’s largest car manufacturer by sales volume.
Hiroshi Okuda will be remembered for his pivotal role in a significant phase of expansion and transformation for Toyota, particularly marked by the company’s globalization and the rise of hybrid technology.
