Closure of the 2025 Winter Octopus Fishing Season with Positive Results

Successful Conclusion of the Winter Octopus Fishing Season in Morocco
The winter octopus fishing season concluded on March 31, 2025, across the national coastline, yielding very satisfactory results. The revenue generated reached 644 million dirhams (MDH), marking a significant increase of 10.77% compared to the 581 MDH recorded in the previous season.
As of March 31, 2025, the total volume of octopus landings amounted to 5,881,303 kg, distributed among several fishing villages, including Lassargua, Labouirda, Ntireft, and Imoutlan. This achievement was made possible through the efforts of 3,082 active fishing boats. However, the average price of octopus saw a decline, dropping from 109.48 DH/kg to 97.29 DH/kg.
The winter season performed particularly well in the maritime district of Dakhla, where encouraging results were achieved. Additionally, the Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries emphasized that the management measures implemented during this season, including those concerning the biological rest period, reflect the government’s firm commitment to the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources.
The objective of these measures is to ensure the ecological and economic sustainability of the sector while supporting operators and ensuring the long-term viability of this activity. It is also important to note that octopus fishing is divided into two main seasons (summer and winter) and involves three segments of the fleet: artisanal, coastal, and industrial.
This activity is of crucial socio-economic importance, creating numerous jobs both at sea and on land, and generating significant commercial value. Therefore, the management, monitoring, and control measures established are vital for the sustainability of this industry.
