Dakhla Set to Host the Largest Hospital and University Complex in Southern Morocco

Dakhla’s Strategic Development: The Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex
Dakhla is undergoing a significant transformation into a strategic development hub with advancements in the Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex. This ambitious project aims to become the primary hospital and academic center in the Southern Provinces, enhancing access to specialized care, training for healthcare professionals, and medical research.
Spearheaded by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health, the complex is being developed over an area of 47 hectares in northern Dakhla. It is part of an integrated vision that seeks to combine high-quality healthcare, academic education, and medical innovation within a single campus.
A University Hospital with 308 Beds
The future facility will feature a university hospital with a capacity of 308 beds, including 58 beds for intensive care and emergency services, as well as 14 operating rooms equipped with the latest technologies.
The emergency department will have the capacity to accommodate nearly 100 patients per day, while the entire facility is expected to serve approximately 120,000 patients annually, thereby improving access to specialized care in the Southern Provinces.
A Platform Dedicated to Healthcare Professional Training
Beyond its hospital function, the project will include a Faculty of Medicine, a Faculty of Nursing, an Engineering School in Health Sciences, and a state-of-the-art medical simulation center.
This infrastructure will enable the training of doctors, nurses, engineers, and other healthcare professionals according to international standards, while fostering scientific research and medical innovation.
A Complex Focused on Sustainable Development
The project also prioritizes environmental considerations. A solar power plant with a capacity of 1.2 MW will supply part of the site’s energy needs, with the goal of achieving HQE International certification at the "Exceptional" level, a benchmark in sustainable construction.
Comprehensive Digitization of Healthcare Services
As part of the modernization of the healthcare system, the complex is set to deploy an integrated hospital information system starting in October 2026. This digital platform will facilitate the management of medical records, streamline administrative processes, and enhance patient care.
A Lever for Development in the Southern Provinces
With this project, Dakhla is reinforcing its position as a regional healthcare, academic training, and scientific research hub. The future university hospital complex will contribute to improving medical services in the Southern Provinces while supporting the ongoing economic and social development of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region.
