Desalination of Seawater: The Strategic Project in Dakhla Reaches a Critical Milestone

The seawater desalination project located approximately 130 kilometers from the city of Dakhla has entered an advanced technical phase. The teams in charge of the construction have completed the installation and outfitting of the reverse osmosis units—an essential step that brings this strategic infrastructure closer to its upcoming commissioning.

This project is part of Morocco’s national strategy aimed at strengthening water security and diversifying water resources, particularly in the southern regions that face challenges related to water stress.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Water Supply

The future plant relies on reverse osmosis technology, a modern process that transforms seawater into high-quality drinking water. The system operates using specialized membranes that filter out salt and impurities under high pressure.

Current work includes the installation of membranes, hydraulic connections, and the setup of necessary support equipment for the optimal operation of the plant before it becomes operational.

100% Powered by Wind Energy

One of the project’s main features is its total reliance on wind energy. The plant will be powered by a wind farm with a capacity of 60 megawatts, illustrating Morocco’s commitment to combining sustainable water management with the energy transition.

This solution will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the desalination process while minimizing energy costs associated with the production of drinking water.

Production Capacity of 112,000 m³ per Day

At full capacity, the plant is expected to produce up to 112,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day. This output will help secure the drinking water supply for the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region while supporting the development of local agricultural, industrial, and economic activities.

The project is part of the broader national seawater desalination program, which aims to increase the Kingdom’s production capacity to nearly 1.7 billion cubic meters per year by 2030.

Beyond its regional importance, this infrastructure represents an innovative model that combines desalination technologies with renewable energies. It reinforces Dakhla’s position as a real-world laboratory for sustainable solutions developed by Morocco to address future water challenges.

Through this project, the Kingdom continues its strategic investments to ensure sustainable management of water resources and support economic development in the southern provinces.
