Ebola Outbreak Disrupts DRC’s World Cup Preparations
The Ebola epidemic has significantly disrupted the Democratic Republic of Congo’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Originally scheduled to take place in Kinshasa, the training camp has now been canceled and relocated to Belgium, according to media sources.
New Ebola Outbreak Raises Concerns
Last week, Congolese health authorities announced a new outbreak of the Ebola virus in the eastern part of the country. This virus is known for causing severe hemorrhagic fever, which can often be fatal.
This outbreak marks the 17th recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and it has reportedly resulted in 139 deaths out of approximately 600 suspected cases identified thus far.
Decision Lacks Official Confirmation
A national team official stated that the training camp, initially planned to last three days in Kinshasa, has been moved to Belgium. However, there has been no official confirmation linking this decision directly to the virus’s spread.
This situation arises as African teams continue their preparations for the upcoming World Cup 2026 qualifiers.
