KGHM Polska Miedź Eyes Morocco to Strengthen Its Mining Operations

The Polish mining group KGHM Polska Miedź is considering new growth operations internationally, with Morocco among the markets under review as part of its expansion strategy.
As one of the key players in the Polish mining industry, KGHM aims to broaden its resource base outside of Poland through new acquisitions, partnerships, and alliances with other companies in the sector.
Morocco Among the Markets Under Consideration
During the presentation of the first half of 2026’s results, KGHM’s CEO, Remigiusz Paszkiewicz, indicated that the group is examining several opportunities abroad.
The research focuses particularly on South America, North America, and North Africa. In this latter region, Morocco is one of the jurisdictions being explored by the Polish group.
KGHM specifically views the stability of Morocco’s legal framework as a favorable factor for potential investments in the mining sector. However, the group emphasizes that no market has yet been selected as a priority destination, and discussions remain exploratory.
A Cautious Approach to the Copper Market
KGHM’s interest arises in a context marked by rising copper prices and increased valuations of certain mining assets.
This trend pushes the group to adopt a selective approach. Management believes that high valuations make some operations more costly and, therefore, require thorough analysis before any investment decision is made.
The goal is to prioritize assets that demonstrate real potential and align with the group’s long-term development strategy.
Opportunities Also Explored in America and Ukraine
In addition to its interest in Morocco, KGHM continues to explore several opportunities in the American market.
The group is also continuing its exploration efforts in Ukraine, where it has already gained experience over several years of activity. New studies are set to update available data on certain deposits deemed promising.
Due diligence operations concern several projects and focus on strategic resources such as lithium and titanium.
KGHM Maintains a Selective Acquisition Strategy
The Vice President responsible for finance, Piotr Krzyzewski, confirmed that merger and acquisition activities are among the items currently being monitored by the group.
However, management insists on the necessity of maintaining a cautious approach and not completing acquisitions at any cost.
KGHM is also engaged in a process of exclusive acquisition, although the identity of the targeted asset has not been disclosed. The group justifies this discretion due to the confidential nature of the negotiations.
An announcement could be made during the next results presentation if discussions reach a successful conclusion.
Morocco: A Mining Market That Attracts Attention
KGHM’s interest serves as an additional signal regarding the attractiveness of the Moroccan mining sector to international investors.
While no investment decision has been made yet, the fact that Morocco is among the markets analyzed by such a significant mining group underscores the growing importance of the Kingdom in the diversification strategies of international natural resource players.
For KGHM, the challenge now lies in identifying assets with sufficient potential to justify establishing a presence or partnership, all while maintaining strict financial discipline.
