Larache Hosts a Study Day on “Sustainable City”: Current Challenges and Future Perspectives

In a context characterized by accelerated environmental and territorial changes on a global scale, the city of Larache hosted a study day themed “Larache, a Sustainable City: Challenges and Solutions”. This event was organized by the Association of Life and Earth Sciences Teachers in Morocco – Larache section, in partnership with the Multidisciplinary Faculty of Larache and several institutional players.

This initiative is part of the project “Towards a Sustainable City in Larache,” supported by the municipal council, aiming to develop an integrated territorial vision that reconciles economic, social, and environmental dimensions while strengthening local governance.

Significant and Diverse Participation

The meeting attracted more than 90 participants, including officials, experts, educational and administrative staff, as well as students, researchers, and civil society actors. This turnout reflects the growing interest in sustainable development issues at the local level.

A Call for Collective Engagement

The inaugural session featured several official speeches emphasizing the necessity of combining efforts to achieve ecological transition.

The dean of the Multidisciplinary Faculty highlighted the central role of the university in knowledge production and skill training to propose innovative solutions.

Meanwhile, the representative of the Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of National Education stressed the importance of promoting environmental culture within schools and involving young people in these efforts.

The president of the organizing association underscored the strengths that Larache possesses to become a model of a sustainable city.

Scientific Interventions Focused on Circular Economy

The scientific presentations illuminated key themes, particularly waste management and the transition to a circular economy, viewed as an essential lever to reduce waste and enhance resource valorization.

Speakers insisted that waste management has now transcended technical frameworks and become a strategic issue related to environmental protection and public health, necessitating innovative approaches like sorting, recycling, and valorization.

Furthermore, the importance of participatory governance and integrated urban planning was emphasized, along with the need to strengthen public policies in the face of the low recycling rates at the national level.

Water and Sanitation Management: Towards Sustainable Solutions

The issue of water resource management and sanitation took center stage during the event. Structural projects were presented, particularly regarding wastewater treatment, water resource reuse, and energy production from biogas.

These initiatives are part of a circular economy logic aimed at reducing pressure on natural resources while minimizing environmental impacts.

Empowering Youth and Civil Society

Particular attention was given to training young people and association actors through a workshop dedicated to advocacy mechanisms and influence on public policies.

Participants were made aware of tools such as monitoring, documentation, digital campaigns, and fieldwork, emphasizing the essential role of environmental clubs in disseminating ecological culture.

Honoring Exemplary Environmental Initiatives

The day was also marked by the recognition of several actors engaged in promoting environmental and sustainable development efforts, honoring their contributions to spreading good practices and encouraging local initiatives.

The discussions concluded with a series of strategic recommendations, including:

  • Adoption of an integrated and coordinated urban model;
