Marrakech and Agadir Experiment with Innovative Coatings to Combat Extreme Heat

Morocco Invests in Permeable Soils to Adapt Its Cities to Climate Change

In the face of increasingly intense heatwaves, Morocco is exploring innovative solutions to make its cities more resilient. Marrakech and Agadir have initiated trials to gradually replace some traditional asphalt surfaces with permeable materials, designed to lower urban temperatures and enhance rainwater management.

This approach is part of a broader strategy for climate change adaptation, aimed at creating more pleasant urban spaces while mitigating the effects of heat islands, which particularly impact large urban areas during the summer months.

Water-Absorbing Pavements that Cool the City

Unlike traditional asphalt surfaces, these new materials allow water to infiltrate into the ground. This infiltration helps retain more moisture under the surface, subsequently promoting natural cooling through the process of evaporation.

Beyond lowering temperatures, these permeable surfaces also help reduce rainwater runoff, minimize flood risks, and conserve water resources—issues that have become increasingly critical in a context of growing water stress.

An Ambitious Urban Transformation

The replacement of asphalt is just one component of a broader urban modernization strategy. The projects also include the development of green spaces, tree planting, the creation of shaded areas, and the implementation of bioclimatic architectural solutions and smart irrigation management systems.

In Marrakech, this initiative is part of the **“Marrakech, Sustainable City”** program launched in 2023, which aims to promote environmentally friendly infrastructure, nature-based solutions, and urban planning adapted to climate challenges. This program is notably supported by the Global Environment Facility.

More Resilient Cities Facing Climate Challenges

Through these initiatives, Morocco reaffirms its commitment to integrating sustainable development principles into its urban planning policies.

By investing in innovative infrastructures and ecological solutions, the Kingdom seeks to enhance the comfort of its residents, preserve natural resources, and prepare its cities for the impacts of climate change, while also boosting their attractiveness and quality of life.
