5th Edition of the ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS 2026) Opens in Marrakech
The 5th edition of the ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS 2026), jointly organized by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), officially commenced on Wednesday, April 14, in Marrakech, under the theme “Regional Solutions, Global Benefits.”
The opening ceremony, presided over by Mr. Abdessamad KAYOUH, Minister of Transport and Logistics, was attended by Mr. Toshiyuki ONUMA, President of the International Civil Aviation Organization, alongside around 40 foreign ministers in charge of civil aviation, Directors General of Civil Aviation from over 80 countries, as well as senior officials and experts from ICAO, and key players in the global aviation industry—totaling over 1,500 participants representing more than 130 countries.
This symposium aligns with the momentum of the "No Country Left Behind" initiative, aiming to enhance the efficiency of support in implementing international standards by translating political commitments into concrete and measurable results for the harmonious and sustainable development of global air transport.
The opening ceremony featured high-level speeches emphasizing the importance of accelerating the modernization of air transport systems, strengthening countries’ capacities in safety, security, and oversight, as well as promoting sustainable development within the sector.
Several agreements and partnerships were signed during the ceremony, reflecting the collective will to bolster technical cooperation, mobilize appropriate financing, and assist countries in developing effective, resilient, and secure aviation systems.
The event also included an aerial display by the Marche Verte Patrol of the Royal Air Forces and the inauguration of the exhibition hall, providing participants with direct insight into innovations and solutions in the sector. A closed-door ministerial roundtable allowed decision-makers to explore strategic mechanisms ensuring the effective implementation of ICAO standards while fostering balanced and inclusive development of global air transport.
The international agenda features seven thematic panels addressing topics such as air connectivity as a lever for economic growth, social cohesion, and regional integration; aviation security; funding for civil aviation; challenges in airport infrastructure; and talent development to prepare the next generation of the aviation industry.
GISS 2026 reaffirms the collective commitment to a safer, more efficient, sustainable, and inclusive global aviation sector, transforming regional solutions into global advantages for all member states.
