Morocco Maintains Its Position Among Russian Energy Importers for the 28th Consecutive Month

According to data reported by the platform Atteqa, based on the monthly report from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), Morocco has now been classified for the 28th consecutive month among the countries importing Russian gas transported via pipeline.

The list of affected Arab countries also includes the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, Syria, Tunisia, and Libya.

What sets Morocco apart is that its Russian supplies do not travel directly from Russia to the Kingdom via pipeline. Instead, they follow a trade route through Spain.

Spain receives liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia, which is then regasified at its facilities before being injected into the gas network. A portion of these volumes can subsequently be transported to Morocco through the Maghreb-Europe pipeline, explaining their presence in the data regarding the Kingdom’s pipeline gas imports.

Morocco is also among the importers of Russian coal, alongside Egypt. Meanwhile, Kuwait appears as one of the Arab countries importing Russian LNG.

On a global scale, China remained the largest market for Russian energy exports in July. It accounted for approximately 43% of the revenue generated from energy exports to the five main importers, with purchases estimated at €7.7 billion.

India ranks second with about €6.4 billion in Russian energy imports. Crude oil constitutes the bulk of these purchases, making up 87%, or roughly €5.5 billion.

Turkey holds the third position, having imported nearly €1.8 billion worth of Russian energy. Pipeline natural gas is a significant component, comprising about 40% of the total, which amounts to close to €731 million.

These figures highlight the reshuffling of Russian energy exchanges since the imposition of Western sanctions, with a strengthening of Asian and regional markets and the use of indirect trade routes, allowing a portion of Russian energy resources to continue reaching various markets.
