Morocco Plans to Enhance Naval Power with South Korean Submarines
Morocco is studying a modernization program for its naval fleet that may include the acquisition of three advanced attack submarines from South Korea, according to several recent international reports.
A Strategic Naval Program in the Works
According to a study by Mirae Asset Securities published in April 2026, Rabat is considering integrating this project into its defense strategy to enhance its maritime capabilities and protect its strategic areas.
Morocco is particularly interested in the KSS-III Dosan Ahn Chang-ho submarines, regarded as among the most advanced in the world.
Cutting-Edge Technological Capabilities
These submarines are distinguished by their low acoustic signature, making them difficult to detect, as well as their air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, allowing them to remain submerged for extended periods without rising to the surface.
They are also capable of launching precision cruise and ballistic missiles, thereby enhancing their deterrence and maritime surveillance capabilities.
Proposed Implementation Timeline
Negotiations or the finalization of contracts could take place by 2027, as part of a broader modernization program for the royal fleet between 2026 and 2030, aimed at improving the protection of coastal areas and strategic maritime routes.
Strengthened Partnership with South Korea
This project is part of the growing relations between Morocco and South Korea, which have intensified in recent years, particularly in the fields of defense industry, advanced technologies, and industrial investments.
