Morocco Remains the Top Client for European Wheat, with Growth Prospects in June

Morocco Maintains Its Position as the Leading Importer of Soft Wheat from the European Union for the 2025/2026 Campaign

According to the latest data from the European Commission, Morocco continues to hold its status as the primary importer of soft wheat from the European Union during the 2025/2026 campaign.

Significant Increase in Volumes

As of May 24, European exports to Morocco reached 3.149 million tons, reinforcing the country’s position ahead of others such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Algeria. This figure also represents an increase compared to the same period in the previous campaign. Overall, EU soft wheat exports total approximately 20.94 million tons, marking a 6% year-on-year increase.

Morocco: A Strategic Market for Europe

The figures underscore the importance of the Moroccan market for European grain exports. Notably, the Kingdom’s purchases rose over the week, ascending from 3.120 to 3.149 million tons. However, this trend may shift as early as June.

Towards a Rebalancing with Domestic Production

The Moroccan grain campaign is expected to show significant improvement, thanks to favorable rainfall and the expansion of cultivated areas. Estimates suggest a harvest of between 8 and 9 million tons of grain, including around 5 million tons of soft wheat. The resurgence of local production may reduce reliance on imports, particularly if authorities prioritize domestic sales.

Europe Faces Potentially Fluctuating Demand

For the European Union, Morocco remains a key client, but demand could become more inconsistent in the coming weeks, depending on the availability of local wheat and sourcing choices. Romania continues to be the leading European exporter, followed by France and other producing countries, according to European Commission data.
