Report: Morocco Strengthens Its Position as a Major Supplier of Fruits and Vegetables to Europe

Morocco’s Rise in the European Fresh Produce Market
Morocco continues its ascent in the European fresh agricultural products market. With high-quality productions, improved logistical infrastructures, and an effective export strategy, the Kingdom is establishing itself as one of the primary suppliers of fruits and vegetables to the European Union.
According to a report by the specialized platform EastFruit, Morocco, alongside Egypt, is among the countries that have most benefited from the decline in agricultural production in several European states due to drought episodes and the increasing impacts of climate change.
Competitiveness Beyond Production Costs
As noted by Kateryna Zvierieva, an international agrobusiness expert cited by EastFruit, Morocco’s competitiveness no longer relies solely on attractive production costs. It now rests on modern infrastructures, efficient logistical services, and a commercial strategy that enables Moroccan exporters to gain market share in Europe. This evolution has strengthened the Kingdom’s ability to meet the growing demand from European importers for fresh agricultural products.
Significant Growth in Tomato and Blueberry Exports
The report highlights the continuous growth of Moroccan exports of tomatoes and blueberries, supported by significant investments in modern irrigation systems, greenhouse agriculture, and transport networks. These investments have allowed Morocco to become one of the most successful exporters of fruits and vegetables in the Mediterranean basin.
Moreover, Moroccan exporters are continuing to focus on tomatoes, citrus fruits, and various types of berries, leveraging their geographical proximity to European markets and an increasingly competitive logistics chain.
Water Management: A Strategic Challenge
Despite these successes, the report warns of challenges related to water resource scarcity. Successive drought episodes exert increasing pressure on the Moroccan agricultural sector. According to EastFruit, Morocco’s ability to maintain its long-term competitiveness will depend on improving water usage efficiency and adopting more sustainable farming practices.
Towards More Resilient Agriculture
In the face of climatic challenges, Morocco is continuing to invest in innovative agricultural technologies, including water-efficient irrigation systems and greenhouse cultivation, to preserve its natural resources while sustaining its export momentum. This strategy is expected to solidify the Kingdom’s role as an indispensable partner to the European Union for supplying fresh fruits and vegetables, while addressing the demands of a more sustainable agriculture.
