Road Transport: Unions Threaten National Strike in the Absence of New Government Support

Tensions Rise in Morocco’s Road Freight Transport Sector
The tension is mounting in Morocco’s road freight transport sector. The Coordination of National Road Transport Unions has called on the government to release a new tranche of exceptional support aimed at professionals in the field, simultaneously threatening national strike action if their demands remain unaddressed.
The unions argue that the delay in disbursing this aid further endangers transport companies already grappling with rising operational costs, particularly those related to fuel.
Transporters Demand New Financial Support
In a statement, the Coordination emphasized that the exceptional support established by the state is an essential mechanism for maintaining the operations of sector businesses, especially the most vulnerable ones.
According to industry professionals, despite a decrease in international oil prices, fuel prices remain high and continue to heavily affect transporters’ operating costs.
Several Demands Addressed to the Government
Beyond the request for a new aid package, the unions are advocating for a more sustainable framework to support the sector.
Key demands include:
- Immediate release of a new tranche of exceptional support;
- Establishment of a mechanism for regular aid disbursement;
- Revision of the legal framework governing fuel prices;
- Introduction of a professional diesel specifically for transport companies.
Industry representatives believe that these measures would enhance companies’ competitiveness and mitigate the impact of energy price fluctuations.
The Threat of National Mobilization
In light of the lack of new announcements, the Coordination urges road freight transport professionals to prepare for various forms of mobilization.
They do not rule out the possibility of a national strike if the government does not respond swiftly to their requests, emphasizing that the economic and social situation within the sector continues to deteriorate.
A Strategic Sector Under Pressure
Road freight transport is a vital link in the Moroccan economy, ensuring the supply of businesses and the circulation of goods across the country.
Professionals warn of the risk of an activity slowdown if no sustainable solution is found to address the rising operational costs. They are calling for a dialogue with authorities to maintain the sector’s stability and avoid a nationwide paralysis of freight transport.
