Morocco Unveils Pavilion at 61st Venice Biennale

On the High Instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, inaugurated the Moroccan Pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale on Friday.

This participation marks a significant milestone in enhancing the cultural visibility of the Kingdom on the international artistic stage through a project that highlights the wealth of Moroccan heritage and contemporary national creativity.

An Official Delegation to Represent the Kingdom

During the inauguration, Aziz Akhannouch was accompanied by a notable delegation, including the Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid; the President of the National Museum Foundation, Mehdi Qotbi; the Moroccan Ambassador to Rome, Youssef Balla; and the Commissioner of the Moroccan Pavilion, Mohamed Benyacoub.

The delegation toured the national pavilion situated within the historic site of the Arsenale, one of the iconic venues of the Venice Biennale.

The Project "Asǝṭṭa" Represents Morocco in Venice

This year, the Moroccan Pavilion features the artistic project "Asǝṭṭa," spearheaded by artist Amina Agueznay and curator Meryem Berrada.

This work illuminates the plural richness of Moroccan heritage through a contemporary approach that values artisanal craftsmanship as tools of storytelling and artistic expression.

The project resonates perfectly with the overarching theme of this edition of the Biennale, titled "In Minor Keys."

A Selection from a National Call for Projects

The Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication had launched a call for projects for the design and realization of the Moroccan Pavilion exhibition.

This initiative attracted 29 submissions from Moroccan artists and curators. The selected project was chosen following deliberations by a jury chaired by Mehdi Qotbi.

Showcasing Moroccan Artistic Creation on the International Stage

Morocco’s participation in this 61st edition of the Venice Biennale serves as an international showcase for Moroccan artistic creation.

It provides Morocco with the opportunity to promote the diversity of its contemporary cultural scene while engaging in significant global artistic discussions surrounding the transformations and innovations in contemporary art.

Founded in 1895, the Venice Biennale is regarded as one of the most prestigious art events worldwide. Held every two years, alternating with the Architecture Biennale, it brings together artists, curators, and cultural institutions from across the globe.
