WHO Prequalification: Maphar Represents Morocco Among the Few Recognized African Laboratories

Maphar: Pioneering Pharmaceutical Standards in Morocco

The Moroccan laboratory Maphar remains, to this day, the only pharmaceutical company in the Kingdom that stands out among African manufacturers with finished pharmaceutical products (FPP) that are prequalified by the World Health Organization (WHO). This international recognition serves as a testament to the quality, safety, and efficacy of its products, while also facilitating access to major global pharmaceutical supply markets.

WHO prequalification is a rigorous evaluation mechanism that ensures a drug meets the international standards required by UN agencies and major international donors. Prequalified products can, therefore, be purchased by organizations such as UNICEF, Gavi, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.

In Morocco’s case, Maphar received this recognition for its combination treatment based on Artesunate and Amodiaquine, aimed at treating malaria. This medication has been officially listed on WHO’s prequalified products list since 2008, confirming the Casablanca-based laboratory’s capability to meet international pharmaceutical manufacturing standards.

Across the African continent, only nine manufacturers in eight countries currently offer finished medicines that are prequalified by WHO. These companies produce medications for treatment against HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, hepatitis C, diarrheal diseases, as well as β-lactam antibiotics.

This presence remains relatively limited considering Africa’s industrial potential, yet it highlights the advancements made in recent years towards developing a local pharmaceutical industry that meets international requirements.

For Morocco, Maphar’s presence on this list solidifies the Kingdom’s position among the African players committed to enhancing the continent’s health sovereignty. This accolade not only reflects the industrial expertise developed by the national pharmaceutical sector but also its ability to produce medications that meet the highest standards.
