Aferdi Triumphs at the Santurce-Bilbao Race

Moroccan athlete Abderrahmane Aferdi shone on Sunday by winning the 37th edition of the International Santurce-Bilbao Race, held on a challenging 15.4 km course in northwestern Spain.
A Remarkable Performance in the Rain
Despite the persistent rain, Aferdi delivered a top-notch performance, crossing the finish line at the Guggenheim Museum esplanade in a time of 42 minutes and 41 seconds, one of the best times in the history of the event. He finished 23 seconds ahead of Kenyan runner Kelvine Kipto, while Peter Kariuki came in third, 48 seconds behind.
Victory for Irene Pelayo in the Women’s Category
In the women’s category, Spanish runner Irene Pelayo took first place with a time of 50 minutes and 38 seconds, followed closely by Lidia Campo (50:49) and Burundian athlete Odile Nintije (50:55). The race featured a strong field and challenging weather conditions.
An Iconic Event Despite the Weather
Despite the rain and strong gusts of wind, this iconic race in northern Spain attracted nearly 3,000 participants, reaffirming its status as a major popular event on the local sports calendar.
