Dams in Morocco: 65% Capacity and Record Performance

Official data from the Ministry of Equipment and Water reveals a significant improvement in the water reserves of the Kingdom’s dams, with an overall filling rate of 65.23%, amounting to over 10.9 billion cubic meters, compared to just 27.71% during the same period last year.

Remarkable Performances in Certain Basins

The Oued R’Rac basin boasts one of the highest filling rates in the country, reaching 92.2%, with a total volume of 998.6 million cubic meters. This performance is supported by the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah dam, which is filled to 94%.

The Loukkos basin is also achieving noteworthy results, with an overall filling rate of 89.3% and reserves totaling 1,706.6 million cubic meters. Three dams have reached their maximum capacity of 100%: Oued M’Khazn, Chefchaouen, and Nakla. Other dams are nearing full saturation: Kharroub at 99% and Samir at 98%, while Joumaa remains low at only 19%.

Sebou, Tensift, and Kébir-Ziz-Ghriss Basins

The Sebou basin has a volume of 4,707.2 million m³, with a filling rate of 84.7%. Four dams are full: Sahel, Bouhouda, Maâne Sebou, and Bab Louta. The Al-Wahda dam, the largest in Morocco, is filled to 88%, holding over 3 billion m³.

In the Tensift basin, the overall filling rate stands at 82.1%, with the Abi Abbas Sebti dam at 98% and Moulay Abderrahmane at 96%.

The Kébir-Ziz-Ghriss basin shows a filling rate of 59.3%, with Hassan Al-Dakhil at 76% and Kaddoussa at 35%.

Souss-Massa, Moulouya, and Oum Er-Rbia Basins

The Souss-Massa basin records an overall filling rate of 53.9%, with the Oulouz dam at full capacity (100%) and Moulay Abdellah and Ahl Souss at 99%. The Youssef Ben Tachfine dam, one of the largest in the basin, is at 48%.

In the Moulouya basin, the overall filling is 52.6%, with the Ala Oued Za dam at full capacity (100%) and Hassan II at 31%, while Injel is at 20%.

The Oum Er-Rbia basin reaches an average filling rate of 38.3%, with the Sidi Idriss dam at full capacity (100%) and the Missira dam being the lowest at 17%.

Drâa-Oued Noun Basin

The Drâa-Oued Noun basin exhibits an overall filling rate of 32.7%, with a total volume of 343.4 million m³. The Agdz dam is the most filled at 42%, followed by Al-Mansour Al-Dhahabi at 36%.
