Motsepe laments the incidents surrounding the AFCON final.

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, expressed his regret regarding the events that marked the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He emphasized that CAF has undertaken revisions of its regulations and laws, as well as specific rules pertaining to AFCON, to address identified shortcomings and enhance the credibility of African competitions.
Appropriate Sanctions and Strengthened Governance
Motsepe specified that these modifications particularly aim to ensure that sanctions are proportionate to offenses, reflecting CAF’s commitment to enforcing its regulations and promoting the image of African football as respected and competitive on the global stage.
The CAF President also highlighted the importance of improving confidence in the refereeing system and judicial bodies, asserting that the confederation will continue the necessary reforms to consolidate these institutions and build upon the achievements of recent years.
Football as a Unifying Force
Motsepe stressed the unifying role of football for African peoples, calling for support for the African teams qualified for the upcoming World Cup. He concluded by stating that the entire continent stands united behind these teams to honor African football on the international stage.
