Moroccan Automobile Industry: Accelerating Industrial Transformation Addressing Sustainability and Governance Challenges

The automotive industry in Morocco is speeding up its transition towards international ESG standards. In its 2025 Annual Report, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) highlights the progress made by the Kingdom in enhancing sustainability, governance, and social responsibility within its automotive sector, which has become a strategic pillar of the Moroccan economy.
Launched in partnership with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, this program aims to prepare Moroccan companies for the new requirements of global supply chains, particularly those imposed by the European Union regarding ESG compliance, traceability, and responsible sourcing.
Over 400 stakeholders mobilized in Morocco’s automotive sector
According to UNIDO, more than 400 public and private stakeholders have been engaged across seven cities in the Kingdom as part of this initiative dedicated to the sustainable transformation of Morocco’s automotive industry. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented with the support of GIZ.
The goal is to structure a high-performing ESG ecosystem to bolster Morocco’s international competitiveness in the automotive industry and strengthen its position as a regional industrial hub.
ESG: Over 100 automotive companies supported
The program has facilitated the support of more than 100 Moroccan automotive companies in improving their ESG practices and due diligence mechanisms. UNIDO specifies that 45% of these companies are led by women, showcasing a notable advancement in inclusion within the national industrial ecosystem.
Four specialized training programs have also been developed to enhance the skills of technical institutions, vocational training centers, and independent experts on issues related to ESG standards and sustainable supply chains.
Morocco strengthens its industrial partnerships
To accelerate this transformation, several strategic partnerships have been established with major players in the automotive industry in Morocco, including AMICA, CGEM, the Moroccan-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, AMDIE, as well as the Renault and Bosch groups.
A conference held in Tangier brought together over 230 participants to address ESG challenges in the Moroccan automotive sector. The Minister of Industry and Commerce, Ryad Mezzour, reaffirmed the government’s support for this industrial modernization initiative.
Morocco anticipates new European requirements
The UNIDO program has also led to the creation of tools designed to assist Moroccan companies in adhering to international regulations related to ESG criteria and assessing their level of maturity regarding sustainability.
In total, nearly 500 individuals have been made aware of ESG issues, and over 260 professionals have gained new skills in sustainable supply chain management.
Through this strategy, Morocco seeks to enhance the attractiveness of its automotive industry in the face of global market shifts, where environmental and social requirements are increasingly critical for access to major international markets.
