Morocco Captivates the Chinese Market to Boost Tourism

Morocco Enhances its Strategy to Capture the Chinese Tourism Market

Morocco continues its strategy to conquer the Chinese tourism market by strengthening its presence among industry professionals and targeting new customer segments with high potential. Through a strategic promotional tour in China, the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT) aims to consolidate the recognition of Morocco as a destination and accelerate the growth trajectory of tourist arrivals from this key market.

This initiative is part of a roadshow organized by ONMT in several major tourist-generating regions in China, specifically Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Guangzhou, with the goal of reinforcing ties with Chinese tour operators, developing new commercial partnerships, and better positioning Moroccan tourist offerings to Asian travelers.

Hong Kong: A Strategic Stop for Attracting Premium Clients

The latest stop in this promotional tour, Hong Kong represents a particularly strategic market for Morocco due to the high purchasing power of its clientele and their growing interest in cultural travels, exclusive experiences, and luxury stays.

In this special administrative region of China, the ONMT brought together around thirty tour operators and travel agencies to showcase the advantages of the Moroccan destination and explore new cooperation opportunities.

Organized by the ONMT’s Beijing office, in coordination with the Moroccan Embassy in China and the Honorary Consulate of Morocco in Hong Kong, this professional meeting gathered operators already marketing Morocco, as well as stakeholders looking to integrate the destination into their catalogs.

Discussions highlighted the richness of Morocco’s historical and cultural heritage, the diversity of experiences available to visitors, and the opportunities presented by the gradual improvement in air connections between China and the Kingdom.

Sustained Growth in Chinese Arrivals to Morocco

During this meeting, the Moroccan Ambassador to China, Abdelkader El Ansari, emphasized the significant progress seen in the Chinese market in recent years. The number of Chinese tourists visiting Morocco has reportedly increased from approximately 107,000 visitors in 2023 to nearly 200,000 by 2025, confirming the growing attractiveness of the destination among this clientele.

The Moroccan diplomat reiterated the Kingdom’s ambition to welcome 500,000 Chinese tourists in the coming years, eventually reaching the milestone of one million Chinese visitors by the beginning of the next decade.

To achieve these objectives, Morocco is focusing on several differentiating factors: the stability and security enjoyed by the Kingdom, the richness of its tourist offerings, the development of air links, and the strengthening of targeted promotional campaigns aimed at the Chinese market.

A Moroccan Offering Tailored to the New Expectations of Chinese Travelers

Otman Mazouz, a representative of the ONMT, explained that this operation is part of a broader effort to increase the visibility of Morocco as a destination among Chinese professionals and establish lasting partnerships with leading travel distributors.

He highlighted a tourist offering based on authenticity, cultural diversity, and premium experiences, aligned with the new expectations of Asian travelers, who are increasingly drawn to unique destinations offering exceptional experiences.

Morocco thus aims to capitalize on several promising segments, including cultural tourism, discovery circuits, luxury stays, desert experiences, golfing, and tailor-made travel.

Hong Kong and the Rise of Experiential Tourism

Professionals gathered in Hong Kong also emphasized the significant potential of this clientele, known for their high levels of tourist spending and interest in exclusive products.

Morocco seeks to strengthen its positioning with this category of travelers by developing offerings that combine heritage, lifestyle, gastronomy, natural landscapes, and high-end services.

Desert experiences, golfing vacations, and cultural circuits are among the identified segments seen as particularly promising, with the possibility of offering packages that combine Morocco with certain European or Middle Eastern destinations.

A Strategy for Diversifying Tourist Markets

Through this initiative in China, Morocco is pursuing a strategy of diversifying its tourism markets by targeting high-potential clientele that could contribute to sustainable growth in the national tourism sector.

After consolidating its presence in traditional European markets, the Kingdom is now focusing more on Asia, particularly China, to enhance its international appeal and accelerate the transformation of Moroccan tourism towards a more quality-oriented, experience-driven, and value-added offering.
