Operation Marhaba 2026: A Lever to Strengthen Ties Between Morocco and Its Diaspora

Operation Marhaba 2026: A Lifeline for Morocco’s Diaspora

Launched under the High Instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Operation Marhaba 2026 commenced on June 10, overseen by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity. More than just a reception initiative, this annual operation serves as a significant event for Moroccans living abroad (MREs) and acts as a means to strengthen the ties connecting them to their homeland.

Moroccan and Spanish authorities have intensified their coordination to ensure smooth and secure transit for travelers. Operation Marhaba 2026 is expected to be particularly vital this year, with an estimated influx of around 3.5 million passengers. To handle this substantial flow, a variety of human, logistical, and health resources have been mobilized at ports, airports, and rest areas, both in Morocco and abroad.

Beyond its organizational aspect, Operation Marhaba holds strategic significance. It reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to maintaining close connections with its community abroad, which plays a vital role in the country’s economic and social development. Each summer, the return of MREs invigorates several sectors, including tourism, transport, commerce, and services.

The economic impact of the Moroccan diaspora is evident not only in remittances sent back to Morocco but also in investments made across various sectors. By facilitating the return of Moroccans living abroad under favorable conditions, Operation Marhaba helps reinforce their attachment to the country and encourages their participation in the Kingdom’s economic and social development.

The Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity plays a crucial role in this operation, implementing social and medical assistance programs and mobilizing numerous teams to support travelers. This human aspect highlights Morocco’s specific attention to the needs of its citizens living overseas.

Thus, Marhaba 2026 transcends the framework of a mere transit operation, serving as a genuine bridge between Morocco and its diaspora. It illustrates the strategic importance of Moroccans around the world in the nation’s development and the strengthening of national solidarity ties.
