The President of the Chamber of Counselors Reaffirms that the UN Process is the Only Legitimate Framework for Resolving the Dispute over the Moroccan Sahara

Title: Moroccan Senate President Affirms UN’s Role in Western Sahara Conflict

On Monday in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, the President of the Moroccan Senate, Mohamed Ould Errachid, reiterated that the United Nations (UN) and its processes represent the "only legitimate framework" for addressing the artificial regional dispute concerning Western Sahara.

Speaking during a public debate on the sidelines of the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Ould Errachid emphasized that certain parties are attempting to exploit international forums to raise the issue of Western Sahara outside the UN framework, a move he called unacceptable. "The UN process remains the only legitimate framework for addressing this artificial regional dispute," he insisted.

The Senate President characterized this attitude as a "deviation," stressing that it does not serve the interests of the affected populations nor contribute to finding a political solution. He clarified that this approach is a geopolitical maneuver aimed at exploiting the Western Sahara issue for specific agendas, which is incompatible with UN principles, particularly those related to self-determination.

Recalling that he is an elected representative of the residents of the Southern provinces, Ould Errachid affirmed his close ties to the Western Sahara region, particularly to his hometown of Laâyoune, the largest city in the area.

He also stated that dialogue forums such as the IPU Assembly should serve as spaces for exchanging ideas and coordinating efforts on matters of common interest, free from any narrow political agendas. These forums must promote regional and international stability and peace, foster understanding among peoples, and contribute to the organization’s objectives.

Addressing the theme of the 150th IPU Assembly, titled "Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Social Justice," Ould Errachid lauded the organization’s commitment to enhancing the role of national parliaments in advancing sustainable development.

Finally, he commended the decision by the President of the UN General Assembly to appoint the Moroccan ambassador and permanent representative to the UN as a co-facilitator for negotiations regarding the political declaration of the upcoming World Summit on Social Development. This recognition by the UN, he noted, reflects the trust placed in Morocco by the international community as a responsible actor, and is the result of the considerable efforts made by the Kingdom under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to strengthen the pillars of the social state and achieve social justice.
