Global Stock Markets Trend Upward in May, Reaching Record $166.45 Trillion

Global stock markets continued their upward trajectory in May, bringing the total market capitalization to a record $166.45 trillion. This remarkable growth has been supported by a resurgence in trading on major international exchanges. The American markets maintained their dominant position, while several Asian exchanges delivered particularly impressive performances.

According to a statistical report published by the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), the global market capitalization increased by 4.25% year-on-year, reflecting the ongoing recovery of markets and sustained investor confidence.

The Americas remain the largest markets in the world, boasting a total capitalization of $83.48 trillion, which represents a 24% increase compared to the previous year. This growth is primarily driven by the Nasdaq, whose market capitalization reached $43.73 trillion, marking an annual growth of 46.1%. Meanwhile, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) reported a capitalization of $32.40 trillion, increasing by 2.2%.

In the Asia-Pacific region, market capitalization soared to $57.16 trillion, a year-on-year growth of 30.3%. The South Korean Exchange distinguished itself with one of the highest global growth rates, with its capitalization skyrocketing by 165.6% to reach $4.94 trillion. The Taiwan Stock Exchange also saw significant gains, increasing by 98.5% to achieve a capitalization of $4.55 trillion.

Markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa also continued to thrive, with a combined capitalization reaching $25.79 trillion, reflecting an annual increase of 33.4%.

The report also highlights that the total number of companies listed on global exchanges has remained stable at around 60,800 enterprises, both domestic and international. The Asia-Pacific region continues to host the largest share of listed companies, accounting for 63.6% of the global total, underscoring its increasing significance in international financial markets.
