Germany Approves €66 Million Loan to Modernize the Water Sector in Morocco
The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) has secured funding of €66 million from the German Development Bank (KfW) to support the modernization of the water sector in Morocco and enhance its resilience against the effects of climate change and water resource scarcity.
This funding is part of the second phase of a program aimed at improving the resilience of the water sector under the financial partnership between Morocco and Germany. The goal is to ensure a sustainable supply of drinking water in a context marked by recurrent droughts and increasing demand.
The program includes the modernization of water production and distribution infrastructures, as well as diversifying supply sources to enhance service sustainability and ensure that water supply meets health standards.
It also aims to gradually evolve the water production model by increasing the use of surface water resources while limiting the pressure on groundwater, which is heavily relied upon for agricultural activities and urbanization.
This initiative aligns with the national strategy to enhance water security as Morocco ramps up investments to address declining rainfall and reduced dam reserves.
Granted in the form of a concessional loan, this funding will enable ONEE to make long-term investments aimed at modernizing water production facilities and improving their efficiency.
The program is expected to continue until 2030, bolstering the various international financing mechanisms mobilized in recent years to support the development of the water sector in Morocco.
