Morocco Strengthens Its Position as a Leader in the Spanish Fruit and Vegetable Market with Nearly 900 Million Euros

Moroccan agricultural products continue to strengthen their presence in the Spanish market. During the first five months of the year, Morocco retained its position as the top supplier of fruits and vegetables from non-European Union countries to Spain, despite a decline in export volumes.

According to the latest data from the Federation of Spanish Associations of Producers and Exporters of Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers, and Live Plants, Spain’s imports of Moroccan agricultural products reached approximately 890 million euros between January and May, with a volume exceeding 303,000 tons.

The value of these imports rose by 6.7% year-on-year, while the volumes decreased by 6.1% compared to the same period last year. This change reflects an increase in the average commercial value of Moroccan products exported to the Spanish market.

With these achievements, Morocco maintains its leading position among non-European suppliers of fruits and vegetables to Spain. Its geographical proximity, the development of its production and export capacities, as well as sustained consumer demand in Spain, are all factors that help consolidate this status.

Spanish Imports Continue to Rise

On a global scale, Spanish imports of fresh fruits and vegetables reached around 2.2 million tons in the first five months of the year, marking an increase of 5.5% year-on-year.

Countries outside the European Union now account for more than 53% of these imports, with approximately 1.17 million tons, representing an increase of 5.3% compared to the same period last year.

The rise also applies to the value of imported products. Spanish purchases from non-EU countries amounted to about 1.932 billion euros, an increase of nearly 7% year-on-year.

Conversely, imports from the 27 EU member states exceeded one million tons, recording a volume increase of 5.8%. However, their value moved in the opposite direction, decreasing by 4.5% to approximately 725 million euros.

These figures confirm the growing strength of non-European suppliers in the Spanish agricultural market. In this context, Morocco continues to play a central role due to its proximity to Spain, the competitiveness of its agricultural sector, and its ability to meet market demand for fresh fruits and vegetables.
