Electrified Vehicles: Morocco Rapidly Accelerates Progress in 2026

The Moroccan automotive market is confirming its shift towards electrified powertrains. Between January and July 2026, BEV, PHEV, HEV, MHEV, and REEV vehicles accounted for 17% of private car registrations, compared to 10.5% during the same period in 2025, according to data from the Moroccan Vehicle Importers Association (AIVAM).

The total number of registered electrified vehicles reached 22,963 units, representing an increase of 86.3% year-on-year. This growth reflects an acceleration in the demand for vehicles that are less reliant on traditional internal combustion engines.

Plug-in Hybrids Show the Greatest Growth

Among the various technologies, plug-in hybrids (PHEV) exhibited the most significant growth. Their registrations surged by 145% in one year, increasing their market share from 2.5% to 5.3%.

Mild-hybrids (MHEV) are also experiencing notable progress, with a rise of 70.4%. Their volume now exceeds 4,000 units over the first seven months of the year, confirming the interest of Moroccan drivers in this technology, which allows for reduced consumption while remaining accessible across different models.

Electric Vehicles Nearly Double Their Registrations

The 100% electric vehicle market is also continuing its upward trend. By the end of July 2026, approximately 1,213 electric vehicles (BEV) had been registered in Morocco, marking an increase of 99.2% compared to the previous year.

In addition to this volume, 1,402 REEV vehicles, equipped with range-extending motors, have been registered. This newly introduced category in the Moroccan market is primarily driven by the entry of several Chinese models.

In total, BEV and REEV vehicles now represent 1.9% of the private car market, illustrating the gradual rise of electric vehicles in Morocco.

Chinese Brands Quickly Gain Ground

This transformation of the automotive market is also marked by a spectacular rise of Chinese manufacturers. In the first seven months of 2026, 21 Chinese brands collectively amassed 15,161 registrations of private vehicles.

They thus account for 11.2% of the market, compared to only 5.1% during the same period in 2025. The number of registrations has increased by 151.8% year-on-year.

The trend continues to solidify in July, where Chinese brands recorded 2,013 registrations, representing 11.1% of private car sales during the month, compared to 1,243 units in July 2025, reflecting a 62% increase.

A Moroccan Automotive Market Undergoing Transformation

These figures demonstrate a dual evolution in the Moroccan automotive market: the gradual electrification of the fleet and the rise of Chinese manufacturers.

With an increasingly diverse offering and the advent of new technologies, electrified vehicles seem poised to take a lasting place in the purchasing habits of Moroccan drivers. This dynamic could further accelerate as manufacturers expand their ranges and consumers become more sensitive to operating costs and the issues related to the energy transition.
