The United States Increases Oil Product Exports to Morocco
American petroleum product exports to Morocco continued to grow in 2026. In May, the United States exported 3.566 million barrels of petroleum products to the Kingdom, compared to 2.816 million barrels a year earlier, marking an increase of 26.6%.
These figures are derived from the latest destination breakdown published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Notably, no crude oil volumes were recorded in American shipments to Morocco during the month.
Butane Makes Up Over 70% of Volumes
In terms of exports to Morocco, butane is by far the dominant product. In May 2026, the United States shipped 2.552 million barrels of butane, accounting for 71.6% of the total monthly exports.
Year-on-year, butane volumes increased by 52.9%, up from 1.669 million barrels in May 2025.
Propane contributed 348,000 barrels to these shipments, slightly up from 334,000 barrels a year earlier. In total, hydrocarbon gas liquids amounted to approximately 2.9 million barrels, representing over 81% of the American petroleum products delivered to Morocco during the month.
This strong presence of butane highlights its significance in Morocco’s energy procurement from the United States.
Over 17.8 Million Barrels Shipped Since January
For the first five months of 2026, American petroleum product exports to Morocco reached 17.806 million barrels, an increase from 16.177 million during the same period in 2025.
This represents a year-on-year growth of 10.1%.
Butane alone accounted for over 12 million barrels during this period, followed by petroleum coke, propane, distillates, and other petroleum products.
Monthly volumes, however, experienced significant fluctuations. The U.S. had shipped 4.311 million barrels to Morocco in January before dropping to 3.003 million in February and 3.202 million in March. Exports rebounded to 3.724 million barrels in April before slightly declining to 3.566 million in May.
This monthly decline of 4.2% does not detract from the overall year-on-year increase.
Propane Declines in the First Five Months
While butane has seen substantial growth, the propane market is following a different trajectory.
American propane exports to Morocco totaled 1.408 million barrels between January and May 2026, down from higher levels during the same period in 2025, marking a decline of 22.9%.
This trend contrasts sharply with that of butane, which saw shipments rise by 18% in the first five months of the year, increasing from 10.278 million to 12.125 million barrels.
Aviation Fuel Makes a Comeback
The May figures also unveiled another category: kerosene-based aviation fuel, with 327,000 barrels exported.
This product had not appeared in any statistics for the first four months of 2026, and there had been no deliveries to Morocco since October 2024.
According to the EIA’s classification, this category includes kerosene-based fuels used for civilian and military aircraft.
Additionally, petroleum coke accounted for 308,000 barrels in May. Since the beginning of the year, American shipments of this commodity to Morocco have reached approximately 3.201 million barrels.
Lubricants rounded out the May deliveries with about 30,000 barrels.
Distillates Total 608,000 Barrels
The distillates, which include certain diesel fuels and heating oils, totaled approximately 608,000 barrels between January and May.
Most of the volumes were recorded in February, with 308,000 barrels, followed by April with 300,000 barrels.
During the same period, the U.S. also exported around 327,000 barrels of aviation fuel, 61,000 barrels of asphalt products, and nearly 67,000 barrels of lubricants.
However, the EIA notes that any discrepancies between the overall total and the sum of the different categories may be attributed to rounding adjustments applied to the monthly data.
No Finished Motor Gasoline Recorded in EIA Data
One noteworthy element from the American statistics is that no volume of finished motor gasoline is reported for Morocco between January and May 2026 in this breakdown.
The section for motor gasoline remains empty, as do those for crude oil, residual fuel oil, and certain special naphthas.
This absence does not necessarily indicate that no commercial shipments of gasoline were imported by Morocco from the United States through other statistical channels. It simply means that no corresponding deliveries appear in the monthly EIA data utilized here.
American Butane Purchases Remain a Point of Interest
The growth of American exports to Morocco during the first five months of 2026 confirms the increasing significance of American petroleum products, particularly butane, in the Kingdom’s supplies.
The EIA’s next release, scheduled for August 31, will include data from June. It will help ascertain whether the steady pace of Moroccan purchases of American butane has been maintained into early summer.
