A Moroccan Innovation for Competitiveness and Sustainability

In the context of a rapidly changing global phosphate market, Morocco continues to strengthen its position among the leaders in this strategic industry. The Kingdom is now focusing on innovative solutions that balance industrial performance, international competitiveness, and adherence to environmental standards.
Amid this dynamic environment, the OCP Group has made a significant breakthrough by developing low-cadmium fertilizers using technologies created by Moroccan expertise. This innovation meets the growing international market demand for more sustainable agricultural products that comply with the strictest environmental regulations.
Cutting-edge technology for purifying phosphoric acid
The process relies on treating phosphoric acid derived from phosphate rock using advanced technologies that extract naturally occurring cadmium from these raw materials.
This industrial operation enables the separation of cadmium, converting it into a solid form that can be safely stored. The purified phosphoric acid is then reused in the production of high-value fertilizers intended for international markets.
A collaboration between scientific research and industry
This technology was developed through close collaboration between the research and development teams at the OCP Group and researchers from Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P).
After several years of research and experimentation, the teams managed to reduce the cadmium content to less than 20 mg per kilogram of fertilizer, a level significantly below the thresholds imposed by European regulations.
An asset for Moroccan exports
This advancement enables Morocco to enhance the competitiveness of its products in international markets, particularly in Europe, where environmental safety requirements are becoming increasingly stringent.
It also aligns with the OCP Group’s strategy to produce next-generation fertilizers capable of improving agricultural yields while preserving soils and contributing to global food security.
Technological sovereignty at the heart of Morocco’s strategy
Beyond its industrial impact, this project illustrates the rise of Moroccan innovation in strategic sectors. By leveraging national scientific research and local expertise, the Kingdom is steadily consolidating its technological sovereignty in the phosphate industry.
This dynamic also promotes the creation of skilled jobs and the development of a high-value industrial ecosystem.
Moving up the value chain
Through such innovations, Morocco is confirming its capacity to evolve within the global phosphate value chain, transitioning from a raw material supplier to a recognized industrial and technological player.
This transformation strengthens the Kingdom’s position in sectors related to sustainable agriculture, ecological transition, and food security, all while consolidating its role as a global leader in phosphate fertilizers.
