Cadmium: OCP Claims to Meet the Strictest International Standards

In response to the tightening international regulations on cadmium content in phosphate fertilizers, OCP Group affirms it possesses the technologies and industrial capabilities necessary to meet the most demanding standards. The company highlights a strategy centered on innovation, scientific research, and technological mastery to reinforce its leadership in the global fertilizer market.

A Response to New Market Requirements

The issue of cadmium has recently gained new significance following the adoption of a legislative measure in France aimed at gradually reducing the permissible levels of this heavy metal in phosphate fertilizers. This regulatory evolution directly affects major international producers, including OCP, the world’s leading exporter of phosphates.

According to Hicham El Habti, President of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and head of OCP’s Innovation & Learning division, the group is already capable of meeting the strictest environmental standards, thanks to investments in research, phosphate recovery, and industrial processes.

Innovation at the Core of OCP’s Strategy

As part of its new organizational structure, OCP has consolidated research, innovation, artificial intelligence, data management, talent development, and UM6P activities under a single umbrella.

This reorganization aims to support the group’s new phase of development, focused on better valorizing phosphate resources and creating innovative solutions with high added value for global agriculture.

Technological Sovereignty as a Priority

For Hicham El Habti, technological sovereignty does not mean locally producing all the technologies used, but rather mastering their functioning and architecture to preserve Morocco’s ability to make its own industrial choices.

This approach relies on developing national skills, artificial intelligence, applied research, and scientific partnerships, regarded as essential levers to strengthen the industrial resilience of the Kingdom.

Consolidating the Group’s Global Leadership

With nearly 70% of the world’s known phosphate reserves, Morocco aims to continue upgrading its phosphate industry. OCP is thus focusing on innovation, sustainability, and continuous improvement of its processes to maintain its competitiveness amid evolving regulations and the growing demands of international markets.

This strategy aligns with a long-term vision to make technology and research key drivers of growth for both the group and the Moroccan industrial ecosystem.
