Dakhla: Home to a Major African Health City

Dakhla’s Transformation: The Mohammed VI International Hospital-University Complex
The city of Dakhla is undergoing a significant transformation with the establishment of the Mohammed VI International Hospital-University Complex, a landmark project aimed at positioning the region as a genuine medical and academic hub on a continental scale. Located on a 47-hectare site about ten kilometers north of the city, this expansive complex combines healthcare infrastructure, educational facilities, and residential spaces within a unique setting of ocean, lagoon, and desert.
A Modern Healthcare Offering with High Capacity
At the heart of the project is a hospital facility featuring 308 beds, including 58 dedicated to intensive care and resuscitation. The establishment will also include 14 operating theaters, 16 surgical rooms, and an emergency department capable of accommodating up to 100 patients daily.
Ultimately, the complex aims to provide care for nearly 120,000 patients each year, significantly enhancing the healthcare offerings in the Southern provinces.
A Campus Dedicated to Training Healthcare Professionals
The project also incorporates a substantial academic component, with the creation of a medical school, a health sciences engineering school, a nursing faculty, and a state-of-the-art medical simulation center.
This academic dimension is intended to locally train future healthcare professionals and position Dakhla as a regional center of excellence in medical education.
A Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Project
Designed according to international sustainable development standards, the complex is based on an innovative energy strategy. A solar power plant with a capacity of 1.2 MW, consisting of nearly 1,900 photovoltaic panels, will significantly reduce the energy consumption of the site and its carbon footprint.
Moreover, the project aims to achieve Exceptional HQE International certification for its hospital and academic components, thanks to the integration of renewable energies and environmentally friendly design.
Dakhla: The Future Reference Medical Hub in Africa
Through this Health City initiative, the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health aims to make Dakhla a continental benchmark for sustainable hospital and academic infrastructures.
The launch of the hospital information system is scheduled for October 2026, marking a new milestone in the realization of this strategic project, which could enhance the medical, scientific, and economic attractiveness of the region.
