Drug Trafficking: A Franco-Moroccan Operation Leads to Seizure of 2.7 Tons of Cannabis

An extensive operation conducted jointly by Moroccan and French authorities has led to the seizure of nearly 2.7 tons of cannabis resin and the arrest of two suspects involved in an international drug trafficking network. This intervention highlights the increasing effectiveness of security cooperation between Morocco and France in the fight against transnational crime.

A Cross-Border Investigation Targeting a Structured Network

The case dates back to April 13, 2026, when the Lille prosecutor’s office launched an investigation aimed at identifying cannabis resin import channels from Morocco. The inquiries quickly uncovered an organized network utilizing maritime and land routes to supply several regions in France.

Investigators suspect members of this organization of participating in the large-scale importation, transportation, storage, and distribution of narcotics, demonstrating a high level of structuring and organization.

Nearly 2.7 Tons of Cannabis Seized at the Port of Sète

On May 24, 2026, a coordinated judicial operation was simultaneously launched across several locations in France by the Lille Research Section, with support from multiple specialized units of the National Gendarmerie, including the GIGN.

This intervention resulted in the seizure of 2,692 kilograms of narcotics, primarily cannabis resin, transported in a vehicle upon its arrival at the port of Sète. French authorities believe that a portion of this cargo was destined for the Lille region market.

Two Arrests and Additional Seizures

The operation led to the arrest of the vehicle’s driver and an individual identified as the alleged logistics coordinator of the network. A search conducted at the home of the latter, located in the Paris region, revealed €34,000 in cash along with an additional vehicle.

The Lille prosecutor’s office opened a judicial inquiry on May 28. The two suspects have been charged, and French authorities have ordered their provisional detention or incarceration pending upcoming hearings.

Franco-Moroccan Cooperation at the Heart of the Operation’s Success

This case illustrates the central role of cooperation between the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) of Morocco and French security services. The exchange of intelligence and coordination of investigations enabled the tracking of the network’s movements and the identification of routes used to transport goods to Europe.

In the face of international criminal organizations, this collaboration appears to be an essential lever for dismantling networks and striking at their logistical and financial infrastructures.

A Strategic Security Partnership

France remains one of Morocco’s main partners in terms of police and judicial cooperation. DGSN statistics indicate that a significant portion of international cooperation cases handled by Moroccan services involves French authorities.

This collaboration covers several sensitive areas, including the fight against drug trafficking, organized crime, terrorism, and cybercrime.

A Strong Signal Against Criminal Networks

The seizure of nearly 2.7 tons of cannabis represents a significant blow to organizations involved in drug trafficking between Morocco and Europe. Beyond the importance of the quantity intercepted, this operation demonstrates the capacity of Moroccan and French security services to coordinate their actions to neutralize criminal networks operating across borders.

As investigations continue to identify potential additional ramifications, this case reaffirms the importance of international cooperation in the fight against transnational security threats.
