Morocco Reaffirms Its Support for the African Medicines Agency in Addis Ababa

The Morocco reaffirmed its total support for the implementation of the African Medicines Agency this Saturday in Addis Ababa, emphasizing its commitment to accompany this continental institution during this crucial phase, aiming for it to become a central pillar in the regulation of medicines and the strengthening of health security in Africa.

Recognition of Progress Made

This position was expressed by the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amin Tahraoui, during a high-level meeting dedicated to accelerating the Agency’s implementation, held in conjunction with the 39th Summit of African Union Heads of State and Government on February 14-15 in Addis Ababa.

The minister praised the advancements made in the implementation process, recalling Morocco’s active support, particularly during the appointment of the Agency’s Director General.

A Strategic Step for Health Security

Under the slogan “Accelerate the Implementation of the African Medicines Agency and Complete Ratification of the Founding Treaty to Provide Quality Medical Products and Strengthen Health Security in Africa,” the minister highlighted the strategic importance of this phase in enhancing the Agency’s role and called for continued cooperation efforts among member states.

He specified that the Agency serves as a central tool to harmonize regulatory frameworks concerning medicines and medical devices, ensure the quality and safety of products, improve supply chains, and support the health sovereignty of African countries.

The Need for Adequate Resources

The minister stressed the need to equip the Agency with the necessary human, technical, and financial resources to successfully carry out its missions, given its central role in supporting national health systems and enhancing preparedness for health crises.

Finally, he asserted that the Agency represents an essential lever for building collective health security at the continental level, praising the role of Rwanda, the host country of the Agency, and its ongoing commitment from the creation phase to the current implementation phase.
